Into the Mountains, Connected with Communities: Asia University Creates In-Depth Experiences of Taiwan’s Sustainability and Local Culture for International Students
To deepen international students’ understanding of Taiwan’s natural environment, local culture, and sustainable living, Asia University continues to extend learning beyond the classroom into communities and nature. Through these initiatives, international students studying in Taiwan not only attend academic courses, but also personally experience the beauty of Taiwan’s forests and the richness of its cultural heritage.
Recently, Asia University organized a field trip to Zhushan, Nantou, for international students from eight countries—Japan, Eswatini, Pakistan, Mongolia, Russia, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam—offering an immersive cultural experience that combined sustainability, traditional craftsmanship, and local festivals.
During the visit, students explored the Zhushan Cultural Park, where professional guides introduced the region’s historical development, the evolution of the bamboo industry, and the diverse applications of bamboo in traditional Taiwanese life. From construction materials and handicrafts to everyday household items, students gained firsthand insight into bamboo as a sustainable material and how it has long been integrated into Taiwan’s lifestyle, reflecting environmental wisdom and cultural practices.
In addition to exhibitions, students participated in hands-on activities such as playing bamboo flutes and bamboo percussion instruments, experiencing the natural resonance of eco-friendly materials. They also tried traditional bamboo toys, including bamboo dragonflies and windmills, learning how earlier Taiwanese communities creatively used natural resources to develop lifestyles that balanced entertainment with environmental consciousness.
In the evening, students visited the Zhushan Lantern Festival, admiring lantern displays that blended local characteristics, creative design, and lighting art. Immersed in the festive atmosphere, they experienced the strong sense of community and warmth that characterize Taiwanese local culture. Zhushan Township Mayor Chen Dong-Mu also personally welcomed the students, demonstrating the community’s friendliness and hospitality toward international visitors.
Asia University emphasized that international education goes beyond classroom instruction; it is a process of guiding students to engage with real society, connect with nature, and understand cultural diversity. By building strong links with local communities, the university enables international students to deeply experience Taiwan’s sustainability values, forest landscapes, and local culture during their studies—an essential feature of Asia University’s warm and in-depth international learning environment.
Looking ahead, Asia University will continue to develop more learning activities that integrate sustainable development, local revitalization, and cultural experiences. Through these efforts, international students who choose Asia University will gain not only an academic degree, but also a profound and unforgettable learning experience in Taiwan.
